2023 Updates
We had a biggest growth year yet from our recent revitalization a few years ago.
Sales about quadrupled at the farm stand due in large part to our steadfast quality, increase in products and from word of mouth. Frank’s array of goods have also helped solidify strong sales at the United Farmer’s Market in Belfast and Jason, the backbone of the farm, got a well deserved opportunity to interact with customers at the Islesboro farmer’s market. Primo, Nina June, and the Hoot continue to support us with the bulk of our wholesale transactions.
Cultivation grew in two directions in 2022. With a well established market garden on the high ridge we added an additional acre of production towards the neighboring blueberry farm. In upcoming years this area will focus on perennial nuts as well as grains. We planted 100 hazelnuts, chestnuts with squash as a ground-cover. We also prepped the grain fields with buckwheat and silage tarps (to solarize and kills weeds). Downhill, protected from the wind, on we added another acre or so. This is proving to be a great place for summer growth, as these fields are wetter and more resilient to longer dry spells we experience. We did learn the hard way that it does seems a little too wet for fall brassicas. Sandra really helped keep the market gardens, our core, going strong as we expanded in many different directions.
Rice did quite well in those lower fields, and through trialling rice at different locations around the property over the past few years, the Maine Rice Project, and Ben, have been able to extrapolate valuable information to share with burgeoning rice growers. We are excited to offer new upland and lowland types of rice seed for sales this season as well as share new rice hullers and equipment with the public. Near the chicken barn Antone broke ground on a new rice paddy system.
Permaculture principles continue to guide our practices. In addition to the nut trees and bushes planted, Antone and Ben helped establish berms, windbreaks, and a multitude of other perennials and herbs around the property. Its quite fun to imagine the bounty of food, wildlife habitat and beauty this place will imbue in the upcoming years as these perennials flourish.
We had our biggest crew yet this season. Thanks everyone who helped this midcoast Maine Farm Thrive!
